One Hundred Grand

So, even after I added in the punchy soundtrack, this still strikes me as one of the least impressive milestones I’ve ever recorded. It would seem as though the digital odometer lacks both the drama and excitement of the older, analog odometers. To be honest, I’m not even sure I trust it. I could be way over, or way under that mark. It’s all just a fancy, electronic, guessing game.

One thing I never thought I’d see though, upon uploading this to youtube, I instantly became grouped with a large number of people that have recorded the exact same event. I’m not really proud of that. I’m not ashamed either, I just think there are apparently a lot of us out there with the time, the ability, the equipment, and the belief that someone else might actually care about seeing this otherwise 999999X repeated occurrence.

In the last 100,000 miles, I’ve changed the oil, the tires, and one slave cylinder for the clutch assembly. Oil and tires don’t count, and the slave cylinder was $70 from the manufacturer, and it took me around 25 minutes total to swap out the old one with the new one. Not bad as far as I’m concerned. Here’s to another 100,000!!

Welcome back, Jon!

As for the video, I see no problem with a) taking it, or b) posting it on YouTube, or c) posting it on your blog.

If I may, I'd like to put my movie critic hat on for a moment. Nobody else I know, in real life or in blog life, could have pulled off making a 72 second movie based on an event that takes a fraction of a second. But here, at the Shuck N Jive, it seemed appropriate.

I should note that the first few times I watched it, I had no audio, so I just thought it was a long video because you're Jon. When I turned up the audio and realized there's a soundtrack, it got way better for me. For starters, it reminds me of eating cake, which is always good. The movie starts off with you going 80, and I'm like, "yeah, he's going to do it!" By the 45 second mark, you had since throttled it down to around 76, and the suspense was building. I was beginning to wonder if it was ever going to happen, or if this was some dirty joke. Then, as if you were reading my mind, BAM - the moment I was waiting for.

I'll have to check the archives to see how that ranks on my "longest comment" list.

It's definitely second to this one...

More research later... maybe...

excellent music choice, jon. you make racking up miles exciting.

however, i worry a little bit about the fact that you were videotaping while traveling at/near 80 mph.

Cadiz: I wouldn't worry too much. I'm a professional, I had an entire crew with me. I was in charge of driving, I had someone else there to steady the camera (he was fired), someone else to do the lighting, the entire band was in the car with me to record the soundtrack live, that required a few roadies to help out with all of their instruments as well as the sound guys themselves to do the recording (I thought they did an excellent job by the way), and of course, you can't put on any kind of production without some union guys involved. All in all, I think there were about 17 of us in the car, so it was far from unsafe. Hope that helps put your mind at ease.

The part that amazes me: 2K RPM at 80 MPH. I'm running between 3000 and 3500 at that speed.

What kind of car is this again?

Jam: I don't know how to break this to you, but I'm sitting on 3000 r's/pm at 80 in this video. But just to clarify, it is a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS with custom key striping all the way around.

But I once owned an '82 Toyota Celica GT with rear wheel drive that hit 80 MPH at about 2200 revs. That rear wheel drive also made for some awesome Dukes of Hazzard like maneuvers when the road got a little wet. Wish I had some video footage of that...

as much as i purport to be a speed demon, this is such a "boy" conversation. except the lengthy comment parts; that i'm totally on board with. and a little jealous of, omar.

Ah.

Yes.

Reminds me of one of my favorite Homer Simpson quotes: "D'oh, I've been making an idiot out of myself."
